Perlin noise for map terrain generation

Posted at — Sep 14, 2023

I have recently taken interest in the random pattern algorithm called Perlin noise. The pattern when applied the right colours, can create some stunning random images. The original algorithm was created in the 80s. The wikipedia site explains this much better than me.

Especially as a child, I liked to draw maps of imaginary countries and islands.

I changed the colours, so any negative value would represent the sea, with dark blue being the deepest, and light blue the shallowest. Any positive number would represent land above sea level.

It looks a bit weird. More like some organisms through a microscope. You can sense the “grid” that Perlin noise is based on. A lot of straight vertical and horisontal lines appear.
